Hello everyone!
Feeling like self-care is just another chore on your already overflowing to-do list? You're definitely not alone! It's National Self-Check Month this February, and what better time to ditch the guilt and discover how to actually enjoy taking care of ourselves? I'm Taanvi Arekapudi, a 15-year-old high schooler, and I'm here to share some tips on making self-care a treat, not a task!

We all know self-care is important – that bubble bath, the yoga class, even just 15 minutes to read – but let's be honest, sometimes it feels more like a chore than a treat. We get caught up in the "shoulds" – I should meditate, I should eat healthier. This guilt-tripping approach rarely works. We all know we should be practicing self-care, but between school, friends, and social media, it's easy to let it slide.
This b;pg post will talk about some of the common hurdles – feeling guilty for taking time for yourself, not knowing where to even start, and feeling like you should be doing something "more productive" instead. Here's the good news: a teenager (yes, you read that right!) will be sharing 3 Simple Hacks to Make Self-Care Feel Like a Treat, Not a Task. Interested? Read more below!
Self-Care: An Investment, Not a Chore
We all know self-care is crucial for our well-being – studies show it can enhance self-confidence (64%), increase productivity (67%), and boost happiness (71%). However, despite 72% of Americans recognizing its stress-relieving benefits, consistent self-care often feels like an unattainable luxury. In 2023, only 40% of Americans practiced self-care daily, while 41% did so weekly, and 10% even less frequently. This inconsistency stems from various barriers, with 52% citing financial constraints and 42% lacking motivation. However, self-care doesn't have to be expensive or feel like a chore. It can be as simple as spending time with loved ones, reading, or enjoying a walk in nature – activities that are both affordable and enjoyable. By prioritizing even a minute a day, we can significantly improve our overall well-being, reduce stress, and ultimately live happier, healthier lives.
But here's the thing: self-care doesn't have to be expensive or time-consuming. It can be as simple as spending time with loved ones, reading, or enjoying a walk in nature – activities that are both affordable and enjoyable. By prioritizing even a minute a day, we can significantly improve our overall well-being, reduce stress, and ultimately live happier, healthier lives.
Relatable Barriers and Challenging Perfectionism
Let's dive deeper into those relatable barriers. We often fall into the trap of perfectionism, believing that self-care needs to be elaborate or perfectly executed. This mindset can be paralyzing. We think, "If I don't have time for a full spa day, then what's the point?" But the point is, any amount of self-care is better than none.
Redefining Self-Care
It's time to redefine what self-care means to you. It's so easy to get caught up in what we think self-care should look like – hours of meditation, elaborate spa days – but honestly, who has time for that? It's not about conforming to some ideal; it's about nurturing your mind and body in ways that actually resonate with your life. It's about listening to what you need in that moment, whether it's a walk, a quick breathing exercise, or just scrolling through funny videos for a few minutes. The point is, self-care should fit your routine, even if it's just for a minute. We all deserve it, we're all capable of it, and we all do it differently. And the best part? As our schedules change (and let's be real, they always change), our self-care routines can change right along with them. It's about finding what works for you, right now.
3 Simple Hacks to Make Self-Care Feel Like a Treat, Not a Task
Here are three simple, actionable hacks to get you started:

Let Go of "Shoulds": Don't get caught up in what you should do for self-care—whether that’s journaling, meditating, or doing yoga. Do what feels good for you, even if that’s binge-watching your favorite show or taking a nap. Self-care is about what works for your mind and body.
Compliment Others: When you offer a sincere compliment to someone, it’s like sending out positive energy into the world—and it often comes back to you. Not only does it make the other person’s day, but it can also boost your own mood and self-worth. Kindness has been shown to release endorphins in both the giver and receiver.
Placebo Effect - Fake a Smile: Even if you’re not feeling your best, giving yourself a moment to smile—whether it’s in the mirror or as a gesture to someone else—can shift your mental state. Smiling can activate the brain’s reward center, sending signals of happiness and calm, even if the smile starts out as "fake." It’s a small trick that can lead to big mood improvements over time.
So, there you have it! Self-care doesn't have to be another chore on your to-do list. It's about recognizing that taking care of yourself is an investment in your well-being, not a selfish indulgence. Ditch the "shoulds," embrace what truly nourishes you, and remember that even small moments of self-care can make a big difference. Whether it's letting go of expectations, spreading kindness through compliments, or even just faking a smile, you have the power to make self-care a treat, not a task. Start small, be kind to yourself, and find what works for you. You deserve it! I hope my tips help, and I look forward to working together to make self-care enjoyable!
Warmly,
